The Gaza Flotilla Incident - Not a dull moment in the Middle East - on May 31, teams from the IDF
elite Naval Commando unit -
Shayetet 13
- raided on a flotilla of six civilian vessels carrying
activists who were attempting to breach the IDF maritime blockade of
Gaza and refused to change course. The operators boarded the boats
from fast
attack boats using
ladders as well as
fast roped
from IAF helicopters. As the IDF was excepting little resistance,
most operators were lightly armed with non-lethal
paintball guns as well as
handguns
for backup. However, when the operators boarded the biggest of the
vessels - the Mavi Marmara - the raid quickly escalated when the few
operators on board were attacked by dozens of rioters (see video
1 and
2),
and resulted to usage of live fire in order to regain control. In
the aftermath, few operators were injured and few activists were
killed and the operators were able to take control over the vessel.
